Piedmont, Alabama — A tragic collision at Indian Mountain ATV Park on Saturday resulted in the deaths of two adults and injuries to seven children. The accident occurred shortly after 3:45 p.m. when two all-terrain vehicles, carrying a total of 11 individuals, collided on one of the park’s trails, according to local authorities.
The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office reported that one adult succumbed to injuries at the scene, while the second person passed away after being airlifted to a hospital. Both deceased individuals are believed to have been married; however, their names have not yet been disclosed.
Among the injured, three children were airlifted to nearby hospitals, with reports indicating that one child remains in critical condition. The remaining four injured individuals were taken to hospitals by ambulance.
Jeff Shaver, a representative of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, noted that the response teams faced challenges accessing the remote location, stressing that some trails are steep and difficult to navigate. Emergency services, including local fire and rescue teams, swiftly responded to the scene, ensuring that those injured received immediate attention.
The collision involved nine individuals in one ATV and two in the other. Following the initial impact, the larger vehicle traveled about 150 feet before overturning and striking a tree. Fortunately, the two individuals in the second ATV were unharmed.
The Indian Mountain ATV Park spans 4,700 acres in the Appalachian Mountain range and offers a recreational space for off-road enthusiasts, including riding, camping, fishing, and hiking. The park remains a favorite destination despite the tragic incident, which has deeply affected the local community.
In light of the accident, Paul McDonald of the coroner’s office issued a heartfelt statement, extending thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims and expressing gratitude to the first responders involved in the rescue operations.
