The Bronx, New York — A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting death of 16-year-old Christopher Redding, a talented football player, and the injuring of two other teenagers. The suspect was apprehended in the northwest Bronx on Saturday.
Authorities indicated that the charges against the teen include murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, assault, and illegal possession of a loaded firearm. Given his age, the teen’s identity has not been made public.
The shooting occurred Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Broadway and West 238th Street, following a confrontation that escalated from inside a nearby McDonald’s. Redding was shot in the back while attempting to intervene in an altercation, according to his father, Bryan Corley.
Corley shared that his son had gone out for a meal when the situation turned violent. “He was going to get something to eat,” Corley said. “Some kids started trouble, words were exchanged, and that’s what happened.”
When police arrived in response to emergency calls reporting multiple shots fired, they found Redding critically injured alongside a 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, both of whom had sustained gunshot wounds to their legs. Redding was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead; the other two teens were treated for their injuries and listed in stable condition.
Witnesses indicated that the initial conflict began inside the fast-food restaurant between a female friend of Redding’s and an older woman, escalating quickly when the woman summoned others for assistance. Corley mentioned that his son responded to help separate the individuals involved, but as they were leaving, gunfire erupted.
In addition to the teen in custody, police are actively searching for three additional suspects believed to have been involved in the incident. Detectives have released surveillance images capturing four individuals connected to the shooting and are appealing to the public for any tips or leads.
Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive for the initial dispute, nor are they clear if the incident was gang-related. Investigators are exploring whether Redding was intentionally targeted or inadvertently caught up in the violence.
As the investigation unfolds, community members are left to grapple with the tragic loss of a promising young athlete, while police continue to seek justice for Redding and his family.
