ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. — The tragic death of an 8-year-old boy has led authorities to charge his mother and her boyfriend with murder and child endangerment. The boy was discovered unresponsive at a residence on Cedar Lake Road last Friday, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Upon arrival, first responders recognized signs of neglect, noting the child appeared malnourished and showed visible bruises. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Investigations are ongoing, but the child’s identity has not been disclosed pending notifications to family.
Investigators from the Round Lake Beach Police and a dedicated task force uncovered evidence indicating the child endured a prolonged period of neglect and abuse, both physical and mental. A 10-year-old sibling of the victim was also interviewed at the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center and later hospitalized due to similar signs of abuse and malnourishment.
The boy’s mother, 33-year-old Dominique Servant, and her boyfriend, 38-year-old Joey L. Ruffin, were apprehended later that night. They have each been charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death. Both suspects are scheduled to appear in court on Sunday.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. Preliminary autopsy results indicate long-term malnutrition and physical abuse.
