LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Tragedy struck over the weekend as a mother and her young daughter were found dead in what authorities are investigating as an apparent murder-suicide during a cheerleading competition. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police were called to check on 11-year-old Addi Smith and her mother, 34-year-old Tawnia McGeehan, after they failed to appear at their scheduled event on Sunday morning.
Concerned family and friends alerted police around 10:45 a.m. after realizing the pair was missing. Initial attempts by officers and hotel security at the Rio Hotel & Casino to make contact with the occupants of their room were unsuccessful. After knocking multiple times without a response and assessing the situation, officers initially deemed they lacked sufficient reason to enter the room. However, following continued concerns from family members, security returned to the room at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Upon entering, security personnel discovered both Addi and Tawnia unresponsive. Emergency services were called immediately, leading to a homicide investigation by law enforcement. Preliminary findings suggested that Tawnia shot her daughter late Saturday night before taking her own life. Authorities confirmed that a note was found at the scene, though its contents have not been disclosed.
The news of Addi’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief. Utah Xtreme Cheer, a program both girls were involved in, shared heartfelt condolences on social media. They expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are completely heartbroken. No words do the situation justice. She was so beyond loved, and she will always be a part of the UXC family.”
Similarly, the Utah Fusion All-Stars and the Utah Cinderella Pageant extended their sympathies, noting Addi’s participation in their programs. In a poignant connection, the Salem Police Department confirmed that Addi was the niece of one of their officers, Sergeant Smith. The department expressed their support for him and his family during this devastating period while also respecting the family’s request for privacy.
Court documents revealed that McGeehan had faced several legal challenges regarding custody arrangements with Addi’s father dating back several years. Allegations of custodial interference—where she was accused of not allowing her daughter to see her father as per court orders—were noted in various cases filed in 2018 and 2021. Although one case was dismissed, ongoing legal disputes have shaped a tumultuous custody situation for Addi.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the complex issues surrounding family dynamics and the sometimes unseen struggles faced by parents. The aftermath has led local organizations to remind the community about resources available for anyone experiencing domestic violence or struggling with mental health challenges. Services such as the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition and the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline are available to offer support to those in need.
As the investigation continues, many are left to grapple with their grief over the loss of a young life filled with potential, while the community rallies around those affected by this tragedy.
