Chitradurga, India — In the early hours of December 25, a tragic road accident claimed multiple lives when a private sleeper bus collided with a container truck on National Highway 48. The incident occurred near Javanagondanahalli, resulting in chaos as flames engulfed the bus shortly after the collision.
Authorities have confirmed that six individuals died, including a young girl aged five, while 28 others suffered varying degrees of injury. The deceased were identified as Bindu V, her daughter Grema, and four others, including the truck driver. The bus was reportedly carrying a total of 33 passengers at the time of the accident.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a compensation package for the victims’ families, offering ₹5 lakh to the families of those killed and ₹50,000 for the injured. He urged officials to extend full support to those affected and ordered an immediate investigation to uncover the accident’s cause.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the container truck crossed the central divider and struck the bus while it was en route, igniting the diesel tank and trapping many passengers inside. Witness accounts reveal that the fire spread rapidly, complicating rescue efforts. Many passengers were asleep during the collision, leaving them with little time to react.
A nearby school bus driver, identified as Sachin, bravely rescued seven passengers before flames and smoke made further attempts impossible. Although the nearby school bus was also involved in the accident, no children on board were injured. The driver of that bus suffered a head injury but managed to assist in the rescue.
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy stated that initial investigations point to reckless driving by the truck driver, who may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He emphasized that preliminary findings do not place any blame on the bus driver. Emergency services responded quickly, with fire crews arriving from various locations to extinguish the flames and aid in rescue operations.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Hiriyur, Sira, and Tumkur, with some patients receiving care at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru. While one victim remains in critical condition, others are reported to be stable. In the aftermath, authorities have been working to identify the deceased, collecting DNA samples for families.
This incident marks a somber holiday for the families impacted, as the community begins to come to terms with the loss and the resultant injuries. Investigators continue their work to ensure accountability and to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
