Ilorin, Nigeria – A tragic multiple vehicle collision in Kwara State claimed the lives of 12 people on Thursday, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the region. The accident involved three vehicles and occurred along the busy Ilorin-Ogbomoso expressway, an area known for frequent traffic incidents.
Local authorities stated that the crash was caused by a combination of a heavy downpour and poor visibility, conditions that often contribute to accidents on this stretch of highway. The vehicles involved included a commercial bus, a truck, and a private car, all of which were severely damaged in the incident.
Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, where they discovered that several victims were already deceased. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), which coordinated the rescue efforts, confirmed that in addition to the fatalities, several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Commander Basiru Yusuf of the FRSC emphasized the suddenness of the crash, noting that, “The drivers were navigating a particularly slippery portion of the road when they lost control.” Yusuf further urged drivers to exercise caution, especially during the rainy season, and to adhere strictly to speed limits to prevent similar tragedies.
A preliminary investigation by the FRSC suggests that the truck may have had faulty brakes, a common issue that underscores the broader challenges of vehicle maintenance and roadworthiness in the country. This incident adds to a troubling trend of road traffic accidents in Nigeria, which have spiked in recent years due to a combination of poor road conditions, inadequate vehicle maintenance, and lax enforcement of traffic regulations.
Community leaders have called for immediate government intervention to address these systemic issues. Alhaji Suleiman Ibrahim, a local chief, expressed the community’s grief and frustration, stating, “We are tired of losing our loved ones to preventable causes. It is time for action, not words.” He urged authorities to enhance road maintenance and conduct regular checks on the roadworthiness of vehicles, particularly commercial ones.
In response to the tragedy and growing public outcry, state officials have promised to allocate more resources towards improving road safety. Plans to upgrade the Ilorin-Ogbomoso road were also discussed, with an emphasis on increasing visibility and installing more traffic signs.
