PENSACOLA, Fla. — A man was killed following a confrontation with law enforcement during an incident at a condominium complex on Wednesday afternoon. The shooting took place around 3:40 p.m. at the Carlton Palms Condominiums on Garden Street, where residents reported hearing gunfire.
According to police reports, a caller alerted authorities to a male suspect firing shots inside the building. Upon arrival, officers learned at least four shots had been fired on the first floor. Officer Mike Wood stated that responding units quickly initiated a search of the premises, determining that no residents were injured.
Witness Andrea Putre, who resides on the ground floor, described a chilling encounter with the shooter. “He was just standing there with a gun, staring at me. For some reason, he didn’t pull the trigger,” Putre recalled.
When law enforcement arrived, they located the suspect in the parking lot, still armed. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by ordering him to drop the weapon. However, the suspect refused to comply, leading officers to fire at him. The individual was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officer Wood confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident. As part of standard procedure, the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the case is under investigation. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
