Elizabethtown, KY – A tragic incident unfolded on Monday when a mother and daughter were fatally shot and a man injured outside a local courthouse in Elizabethtown, followed by a police chase that ended with the assailant shooting himself, authorities confirmed.
The shooter, identified as 46-year-old Christopher Elder, remains in critical condition from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following the high-speed chase. Police have linked the grim sequence of events to a court appearance at the Hardin County courthouse earlier that day involving Elder and one of the victims.
The deceased victims, Erica Riley, 37, of Elizabethtown, had previously been in a relationship with Elder. She attended the courthouse with her mother, Janet Riley, 71, from Hardinsburg, who also succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a hospital.
Following the courthouse incident, Elder fled the scene, prompting a swift response by law enforcement. The Elizabethtown Police Chief Jeremy Thompson reported that Elder was intercepted on a highway in western Kentucky. Before law enforcement could secure him, Elder inflicted a gunshot wound on himself. During the pursuit, police negotiators had attempted to engage Elder, to no avail.
Details on the injured man, who is related to Riley, report that he is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. His identity has not been disclosed to the public.
In the wake of the shooting, the vicinity around the Hardin County Justice Center was locked down temporarily. This “soft lockdown” was an immediate response to ensure public safety as police assessed the threat level of the situation, determining it to be an isolated incident.
Eyewitness Michael Cockerel recounted the moments of the shooting. He initially mistook the gunshots for construction noises, a misconception that he rectified only after identifying the sound of consecutive shots. Cockerel took cover and managed to steer clear of direct harm. Observing the aftermath, he noted the pronounced chaos but did not see the shooter.
Local authorities are continuing their investigation into what led up to the tragic sequence of events, as the community grapples with the impact of the violence. The shootings have left a somber mark on Elizabethtown, a quiet town located about 45 miles south of Louisville, unsettling residents and authorities alike.
This incident brings to light the broader issues of domestic relationships intersecting dangerously with public spaces, signaling a concerning trend that law enforcement is painstakingly working to understand and mitigate.
The community and local officials are calling for a thorough review of courthouse security measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. Meanwhile, police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward to aid the ongoing investigation.
