CANTON, Texas — Last month, a tragic plane crash in Van Zandt County resulted in the death of a 60-year-old man, according to a preliminary report released by the National Transportation Safety Board.
The report detailed the events leading up to the crash, which claimed the life of Roger D. Turner of Edgewood, Texas. Turner was fatally injured when his small plane crashed at about 6:13 p.m. on Dec. 26, 2023, near Canton.
The report revealed that a witness heard radio transmissions from Turner, who reported that the plane was west of Thompson Field Airport. The witness stated that the radio transmissions were normal, and they went outside to see the plane approach. However, they couldn’t determine if the plane was lined up with the runway from their vantage point.
Tragically, the plane collided with trees and terrain before coming to a stop against a home. The report indicated that the plane’s path was not aligned with the runway and that the impact forces destroyed the aircraft.
Further examination of the plane’s flight control system confirmed flight control continuity. The propeller and propeller spinner also showed features consistent with engine operation at the time of impact.
The crash site, located about 60 miles east of Dallas, was just a few hundred feet away from the main airstrip in an aviation-oriented community called Tailwind Airpark.
Despite the tragic outcome, it is fortunate that no fire erupted from the crash, as there was a significant amount of fuel on the ground leaking. The community, along with emergency crews, worked diligently to address the aftermath of the devastating crash.
