RIVERVIEW, Fla. – A tragic accident on southbound Interstate 75 in Riverview, Florida resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two young boys. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reported the devastating crash on Wednesday afternoon. The incident involved multiple vehicles and occurred just after 3 p.m. north of the Selmon Expressway.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision took place when two pickup trucks traveling southbound on I-75 collided while attempting to switch lanes. As a result of the crash, both trucks spun out of control.
The first truck, carrying a family, veered into the grass median, leading to the ejection of the driver and all three passengers. Tragically, a 36-year-old man, a 34-year-old woman, and their 12-year-old son, all from Clearwater, lost their lives in the accident. Additionally, the family’s 14-year-old cousin, from Texas, succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
In contrast, the occupants of the second truck, including the driver and two young children in the back, escaped without injuries. The FHP confirmed that everyone in the second truck was wearing a seatbelt, highlighting the crucial role of safety restraints in preventing fatalities and injuries in vehicular accidents.
The authorities emphasized the importance of seatbelt usage, particularly for young passengers, citing statistics from the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles that revealed a significant number of child passenger fatalities in 2022 were a result of inadequate restraint use.
Ultimately, the crash resulted in the closure of all southbound lanes on I-75 for several hours, necessitating traffic diversion off Exit 254. While the roadway has since reopened, the tragic incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations to prevent further loss of life on the roads.
