FRESNO, Calif. — A tragic shooting incident in Fresno has left a community mourning the loss of a local man, 33-year-old Nicholas Bolanos, who was fatally shot while attempting to help a former coworker. Witnesses and officials say the circumstances leading up to the attack reflect a troubling series of events that culminated in violence.
Bolanos was reportedly trying to assist Scott Alvarado, 41, who had been living with him but was asked to leave weeks prior. A verbal altercation erupted when Bolanos insisted that Alvarado vacate the premises. Police were initially called to the home, located near Crystal Avenue and Griffith Way, when neighbors reported a disturbance.
According to Fresno police, responding officers stood by while Alvarado removed some of his belongings. They determined there was no immediate threat during their initial visit. Bolanos’ mother, Leonora Luna, expressed frustration with the police response. She said she tried to seek their assistance multiple times, especially after Alvarado returned with threats.
“Time and time again, I called for help,” Luna said, recounting her desperate attempts to protect her son. As Bolanos and his mother were on their way to purchase a security camera for their home, Alvarado allegedly returned and opened fire, leading to Bolanos’ death.
Luna described her son as someone committed to helping his community, stating that he embodied kindness and was a protector to those around him. “My son was a good man, everyone should know how he lived,” she emphasized, hoping the community remembers him for his positive impact rather than the tragic way in which he died.
In the wake of the incident, law enforcement tracked down Alvarado in North Fork, where he was arrested and charged with murder. Police reports indicate Alvarado had a prior criminal record, including a DUI, and was participating in a diversion program at the time of the shooting.
With Alvarado now in custody, Luna is calling for justice, expressing her wish for a severe penalty. “I want him to serve 50 years,” she asserted, hoping he reflects on the consequences of his actions.
As the investigation continues, police are still searching for the firearm involved in the shooting. Authorities urge anyone with information about the case to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. The community remains in shock, grappling with the loss of a man known for his kindness and commitment to others.
