Rock Spring, GA — A domestic tragedy unfolded in Walker County on Saturday evening, resulting in three fatalities and one person critically injured. Local authorities reported to the scene at a residence in Rock Spring after a distress call was made around 7:10 p.m.

The investigation quickly focused on Russell David Payne, 54, who had been estranged from his wife, Jacklyn D. Payne, 54. At the time of the shooting, Jacklyn was residing with her 79-year-old father, Eugene Denny, both of whom are now confirmed as deceased.
According to the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, the shooter, identified as Russell Payne, made a violent entrance to the home on Woodstation Road. He reportedly drove to the house, initiated the attack by firing multiple .223 caliber rounds into the rear of the residence, and subsequently entered the house to continue his rampage.
Inside the home, a struggle ensued when a 52-year-old male resident confronted Payne. The altercation ended when Payne succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The 52-year-old was seriously wounded during the altercation and was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
