Tragic Family Dispute in Harrison County Ends in Double Fatality and Police Investigation

LACONIA, Ind. — A peaceful rural area in Harrison County became the scene of a tragic incident this Friday as a shooting at a home left two people dead and another injured. Indiana State Police along with local Harrison County officers responded to the disturbance at a residence situated on Mosquito Creek Road near the small town of Laconia.

Upon arriving, authorities discovered 56-year-old Marion Young with a gunshot wound to his arm. Young, who had managed to escape to a neighbor’s house to seek help, was subsequently transported to a hospital in Louisville. Reports confirm that his injuries are not life-threatening.

The situation escalated when officers attempted to check on two other individuals believed to be inside the residence. After receiving no response, a further inspection of the premises revealed a grim scene. Two elderly individuals, identified as 84-year-old Donald Ray Weaver and 82-year-old Virginia Scoffield, were found deceased near the back door of the home.

Initial investigations suggest that the incident stemmed from an altercation earlier in the evening between Weaver and Young. Details provided by the authorities indicate that after the confrontation escalated, Weaver followed Young outside and fired a gun, striking him in the arm.

After Young fled to call for help, more gunshots were reportedly heard from the direction of the house. Investigators believe that during these moments, Weaver shot Scoffield, who had stepped outside during the initial altercation. Tragically, Weaver is then believed to have turned the firearm on himself.

Autopsies are scheduled to be conducted on both deceased individuals to confirm the precise causes of death.
