Tragic Field Trip: Student’s Self-Inflicted Death

PROVO, UT – A community is in mourning after a tragic incident unfolded during a school field trip in Provo Canyon. A ninth-grade student from Canyon View Junior High School died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leaving classmates, teachers, and staff grappling with shock and sorrow.

The incident occurred during a school outing to South Fork Park, where approximately 350 students had gathered to enjoy the fall scenery. The serene setting was abruptly disrupted when a gunshot echoed through the canyon shortly after 1 p.m. Teachers and staff quickly called 911 and moved students to safety, but the emergency response came too late to save the young student.

In the aftermath, a vigil was held outside Canyon View Junior High. Hundreds gathered, candles flickering in the evening air, as students and community members embraced and shared tears, honoring the memory of their fellow student.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine how the student acquired the firearm and to understand the circumstances leading to the tragedy. Preliminary interviews with student witnesses have been conducted, with plans for further discussions after giving those affected time to process the event.

The Alpine School District has canceled parent-teacher conferences originally scheduled for Thursday. Classes will resume as planned, but with additional support measures in place. Counselors will be available to students and staff for as long as needed to help them cope with the emotional trauma.

District officials emphasized the importance of community support, encouraging students to return to an environment where they feel cared for and secure. They are committed to providing a nurturing space for healing during this difficult time.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting those affected by the tragedy and ensuring the well-being of the school community.
