Orlando, Fla. — The Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the cause of death for a man who died while aboard a roller coaster at Universal Orlando Resort. Authorities reported that 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala was found unresponsive shortly after exiting the ride on Wednesday. Despite immediate medical attention and transport to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Initial reports from Orange County deputies indicated that Zavala did not fall from the ride. An autopsy revealed he succumbed to multiple blunt force injuries resulting from an accident, as stated by Chief Medical Examiner Joshua Stephany. He characterized the incident as an accidental death.
Universal Orlando Resort expressed its condolences, stating they are mourning the loss and are committed to cooperating with local authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. The resort emphasized its dedication to safety and the well-being of its guests.
The ride, part of the recently opened Epic Universe attraction, is described as a dual-launch racing coaster that reaches speeds of 62 mph and ascends to heights of 133 feet. With over 5,000 feet of track designed for maximum thrills, it is branded as Universal’s most intense roller coaster to date.
Epic Universe opened its doors in May and represents the first major expansion of a theme park in Florida since 1999. The new park complements the existing Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, along with a water park that debuted in 2017. In addition to attractions, the resort plans to incorporate a 500-room hotel and several themed lands.
In Florida, larger theme parks like Universal and Walt Disney World conduct their own safety inspections rather than being subject to state regulations, which only oversee smaller parks and traveling fairs. These major attractions are required to report any incidents resulting in injury or death to state officials.
As the investigation continues, families and guests alike are left to reflect on the importance of safety at amusement parks, where millions enjoy thrilling experiences every year. The events at Epic Universe have sparked conversations on the measures taken to ensure guest safety in high-velocity attractions.
