Tragic Incident in Dunmore: Son Claims Self-Defense in Fatal Shooting of Father During Domestic Altercation

DUNMORE, Pa. — A man was fatally shot by his son during a domestic dispute on Sunday evening, sparking an investigation by local authorities. Lackawanna County District Attorney Brian Gallagher confirmed the incident, stating that law enforcement is exploring whether the shooting qualifies as self-defense.

Dunmore police responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on Mortimer Street around 8:31 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Frederick Zantowsky Jr., 47, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel transported him to Geisinger Community Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The shooter, identified as Zantowsky’s son, remained at the scene and was taken into custody for questioning. Authorities have not released the son’s name or age. After providing information to detectives, he was released while the investigation continues.

According to Gallagher, the incident unfolded as Zantowsky displayed signs of intoxication and brandished a firearm. He allegedly pointed the weapon at his son and other family members, which included an 8-year-old child. “The deceased’s son fired his own weapon one time, striking the victim,” Gallagher explained.

Detectives believe this incident was contained and poses no ongoing threat to the community, Gallagher noted. The situation is being treated as isolated, with the Lackawanna County coroner set to determine the cause and manner of Zantowsky’s death.

A collaborative effort involving the Lackawanna County district attorney’s office, local police departments, and forensic services is underway to ensure a comprehensive investigation. Details surrounding the event, including witness accounts and forensic evidence, will be crucial in the following days as officials work to piece together what transpired.

As the investigation progresses, community members are left grappling with the impact of violence in their neighborhood. Additional updates are expected as authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
