Louisville, Ky. — A serious listeria outbreak has prompted a food recall involving ready-to-eat chicken fettuccine Alfredo meals that have been linked to multiple fatalities. As of June 20, 2025, three deaths, one fetal loss, and 17 reported illnesses have been associated with these products, raising alarm among public health officials.
The meals, produced by FreshRealm, have been distributed to major retailers including Kroger and Walmart across the United States. The recall affects several varieties of chicken fettuccine Alfredo, including 32.8-ounce trays labeled “Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo” that feature grilled chicken and creamy Alfredo sauce, as well as 12.3-ounce trays that include broccoli. Also included are 12.5-ounce trays of “Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo.” The relevant best-by dates for the products vary from June 19 to June 27, 2025.
Each of the recalled products is marked with establishment numbers “EST. P-50784,” “EST. P-47770,” and “EST. P-47718,” which consumers can use to identify them. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has expressed concern that some of these meals could still be in consumers’ freezers or refrigerators.
Officials are urging anyone who might have purchased these items to refrain from eating them and to return them to the place of purchase or dispose of them immediately. Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium responsible for listeriosis, poses significant health risks, particularly to pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Public health agencies, including the FSIS, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are currently investigating the outbreak to determine the source of contamination. Investigators are working diligently to track and contain the situation in order to prevent further illness.
As the investigation unfolds, health authorities emphasize the importance of checking food supplies and ensuring that any potentially contaminated meals are discarded. Consumers are advised to maintain proper food safety practices, as listeriosis can lead to severe complications and long-term health issues.
The outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with ready-to-eat meals and the importance of food safety protocols. As health officials continue their work, consumers are encouraged to stay informed and vigilant regarding food recalls.
