RALEIGH, N.C. — A treasured educator in North Carolina was tragically killed Saturday morning while on the phone with emergency services. Authorities reported that Zoe Welsh, a teacher at Ravenscroft School, made a 911 call around 6:30 a.m. to alert police about an intruder in her home.
During the call, Welsh was reportedly assaulted by 36-year-old Ryan Camacho, who was found at the scene by Raleigh police. Despite efforts by first responders to provide immediate medical care, Welsh later died from her injuries at a nearby hospital.
Camacho was arrested shortly after the incident and has been charged with murder, as well as felony breaking and entering. Investigators noted that this assault was not his first encounter with law enforcement; Camacho has a lengthy criminal record in North Carolina dating back to 2005, including multiple charges for breaking and entering.
Following news of Welsh’s death, local and state officials expressed their condolences. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein acknowledged Welsh’s contributions to her students and community, calling her a “special teacher.” Stein described the incident as another heartbreaking act of violence that has affected the community deeply.

Ravenscroft School issued a statement expressing its devastation over the loss of Welsh, describing her as a “beloved” member of the school community.
