Tragic Loss in Milwaukee: Young Mother Falls Victim to Gun Violence, Leaving Behind Infant Daughter

Milwaukee, WI – A tragic shooting on Wednesday claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl in Milwaukee, plunging a family into deep grief as they grapple with the loss and the future of her 6-month-old daughter. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the young mother as Zaniya Booker.

According to authorities, the incident occurred near the intersection of 28th and Atkinson, a residential area which has now become a scene of sorrow for Booker’s family. Milwaukee police are actively searching for the suspect involved, as the investigation continues to unfold with many questions remaining unanswered.

Amidst their pain, Booker’s parents Demetrius James and Ineshia Saunders expressed their devastation over their daughter’s untimely death. Booker, a junior at Shalom High School, had aspired to pursue a career either as a beautician or within the realm of law enforcement. Her ambitions, now dashed, leave her family clinging to what remains—her infant daughter, Jazayla.

“This is part of my daughter. This is what I got left,” James said, reflecting on how Jazayla resembles her mother. The presence of the baby offers a bittersweet comfort as the family copes with the enormity of their loss.

Describing the profound shock of the event, James recounted arriving at the scene of the shooting: “When I saw there was no ambulance, I kind of knew,” he said, indicating it was a moment filled with grim realization. Booker was reportedly with the father of her child when the incident occurred.

Saunders summarized her agony in stark terms. “All the mixed emotions – lost, hurt, broken, sad, confused,” she explained, revealing the depth of emotional turmoil brought on by such violent circumstances.

Compounding the tragedy, the family not only mourns the loss of Booker but also faces the challenges associated with raising a young child under the shadow of grief. “We’re taking on a lot with a newborn grandchild,” James acknowledged, emphasizing the dual weight of their sorrow and new responsibilities.

In homage to Booker’s life and legacy, the family has planned a vigil set for Feb. 4, which would have marked her 18th birthday. Supporters have also initiated a GoFundMe campaign to provide financial assistance to the bereaved family during this incredibly challenging time.

Meanwhile, Milwaukee police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the resolution of this case and the apprehension of the responsible party. People with information are encouraged to contact MPD or anonymously report to Crime Stoppers or use the P3 tips app, as the community and Booker’s family await justice for this senseless act of violence.
