Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, India — The tragic loss of 27-year-old international shooter Sambhaji Patil has sent shockwaves through the sports community after he died in a devastating road accident on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad National Highway. Patil, who had represented India on an international scale, was on his way to shooting practice when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Known for his exceptional talent in the 25-meter standard pistol category, Patil had earned accolades early in his career, including a gold medal at the Junior World Cup in Azerbaijan in 2016. This victory not only showcased his potential but also put him on a path toward becoming one of India’s premier shooters. His international credentials were further solidified in 2017 when he placed 23rd at the World Championship, marking him as an athlete to watch.
Patil was trained by renowned shooter and former Olympian Jaspal Rana. Under Rana’s guidance, he not only honed his shooting skills but also took on the role of a mentor, helping to shape the next generation of athletes as a Sports Officer at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune. His commitment to the sport extended beyond personal achievement, as he worked towards elevating the standards of Indian shooting.
The accident occurred around 10 a.m. on Monday while Patil was traveling with fellow shooter Yash Prashant Choudhary. Authorities reported that their SUV, a Toyota Fortuner, was traveling at a high speed when it collided with a heavy truck during an attempted lane change. The impact was severe, leaving the front of the vehicle completely mangled and leading to Patil sustaining critical injuries.
Emergency responders rushed Patil to a nearby medical facility, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Choudhary, who suffered serious injuries, is currently receiving treatment. Local police have initiated a case of accidental death at the Manor police station, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
