Las Vegas, Nevada — A tragic collision Tuesday evening claimed the lives of two individuals and left several others injured in northwest Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that the crash occurred around 3:29 p.m. at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard.
Authorities indicated that a car was traveling at high speed eastbound on Cheyenne when it failed to stop for a red light and collided with several vehicles waiting at the intersection. In total, 12 vehicles were involved in the crash, creating a chaotic scene that would require significant emergency response efforts.
The police identified the deceased as a 20-year-old female passenger, who was riding with the speeding driver, Jose Gutierrez, 19, and a 38-year-old male driver from another car. According to reports, Gutierrez was booked in absentia on multiple counts of reckless driving resulting in bodily harm or death while receiving medical treatment at a nearby facility.
Among those injured, a 24-year-old female passenger suffered life-threatening injuries, while two other drivers, including Gutierrez himself, sustained serious injuries. Emergency medical teams quickly triaged victims at the scene and transported several individuals to University Medical Center for advanced care.
In a briefing following the accident, police spokesperson Jose Hernandez expressed deep concern about the rising incidence of reckless driving, emphasizing the need for community intervention to prevent such tragedies. “This has to stop,” he stated, urging residents to take part in efforts aimed at improving road safety.
The intersection was closed to traffic for several hours as investigators worked to piece together the details of the crash. It was not until around 4 a.m. Wednesday that the scene was cleared and normal traffic resumed.
