Mission, Canada — A tragic multi-vehicle collision claimed the life of a 74-year-old man on Thursday morning at a busy intersection along Lougheed Highway. The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. at the junction with the Cedar Valley Connector, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered a chaotic scene involving six vehicles, one of which was a BC Transit bus. Witnesses reported that a red GMC Sierra pickup truck was seen moving erratically just before the accident, weaving through stopped traffic in both lanes.
Investigators from the Mission RCMP indicated that the GMC Sierra was heading eastbound when it suddenly drove down the middle of the halted vehicles before crashing through the intersection. The impact resulted in the truck colliding with a utility pole on the opposite side.
Despite efforts to stabilize him, the driver of the GMC Sierra succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident. Another driver involved was taken to the hospital but is expected to recover from non-life-threatening injuries.
Fortunately, there were no significant injuries reported for the other drivers involved or the passengers aboard the BC Transit bus. However, the incident has left the community rattled as authorities work to determine the cause of the driver’s erratic behavior.
The Mission RCMP, alongside the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and the BC Coroner Service, has launched an investigation to piece together the events leading up to the crash. According to officials, a particular area of focus will be understanding whether any medical conditions may have contributed to the driver’s sudden change in behavior.
Authorities are encouraging anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have dashcam footage of the red GMC Sierra on Lougheed Highway around the time of the incident to step forward. Those with information are asked to contact the Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161, referencing incident file number 2026-1586.
As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring safety on the roads and preventing future tragedies. Community members are left mourning the loss of life and reflecting on the need for vigilance behind the wheel.
