VENICE, Fla. — A tragic accident on River Road in Venice led to multiple fatalities and prompted a significant road closure in Sarasota County on Tuesday morning, officials reported. The collision, involving two vehicles, resulted in a fiery aftermath and serious injuries.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred when a southbound vehicle on SR-777, just south of West Villages Parkway, swerved across the median and collided with an oncoming vehicle. The impact caused the southbound vehicle to burst into flames and the northbound vehicle to overturn onto the road shoulder.
Authorities confirmed that both the driver and passenger of the vehicle that caught fire died at the scene. The driver of the overturned vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Their current condition has not been disclosed.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene to manage the aftermath and begin preliminary investigations. The road was temporarily closed to traffic in both directions between West Villages Parkway and where the road divides from four to two lanes, causing significant delays and rerouting of traffic.
The Florida Highway Patrol has taken the lead on the investigation to determine the specific causes of the crash and to assess contributing factors such as vehicle speed and road conditions at the time of the accident. No charges have been announced at this stage.
Local authorities are urging motorists to seek alternative routes until further notice. Signs and local traffic management interventions have been put in place to assist drivers navigating around the closed section of River Road.
