Tragic Murder of Young Belfast Mother Prompts Investigation Over Police Response to Prior Violence Reports

Belfast, Northern Ireland – The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has launched a murder investigation following the discovery of the body of 22-year-old Mary Ward in her home in Melrose Street, south Belfast. Found deceased on October 1, Ward was the victim of a brutal attack, sustaining multiple wounds to the neck. It is believed she was murdered on September 25, although her body was only discovered several days later.

The PSNI had been in contact with Ms. Ward several times in the weeks leading up to her tragic death, beginning on September 4 when she filed a complaint about being a victim of violence. The last known contact between the police and Ms. Ward occurred on the day investigators believe she was killed. The case has drawn particular scrutiny and concern, leading to its referral to the Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland for review of the police response to the reports of violence prior to her death.

The Police Ombudsman has initiated an investigation focusing specifically on the PSNI’s handling of the violence reported against Ms. Ward in the weeks preceding her murder. In a statement, the PSNI acknowledged the referral, emphasizing that while there is currently no suggestion of individual misconduct, there is considerable concern surrounding the organization’s overall response to the situation.

This case marks another somber statistic in an alarming trend, as Ms. Ward is the fourth woman to be murdered in Northern Ireland in the last six weeks. Detective Chief Superintendent Fisher, head of the public protection branch, expressed deep concern over the recurring violence against women. “Four families have been shattered forever by meaningless violence,” Fisher stated, adding, “As a police service, we have revamped our approach to these incidents, aligning our action plan for tackling violence against women and girls with frameworks used against terrorism and serious organized crime.”

Amid rising incidents of violence against women, the issue has become a top priority for both law enforcement and political leaders in Northern Ireland. Two years ago, the PSNI introduced an action plan to address this violence, and recently, an Executive Office strategy was unveiled aiming to further strengthen responses and preventative measures.

Over the past five years, more than 30 women and girls in Northern Ireland have been murdered, according to local advocacy groups. While the PSNI data shows a 16% decrease in violence against women and girls-related offenses from the previous year, authorities acknowledge that much work remains to be done.

The response to this recent tragedy has been widespread and vocal. Sinn Féin MLA Deirdre Hargey voiced her disgust at the ongoing violence: “Violence against women and girls anywhere in our society is reprehensible and must be eradicated.” Women’s Aid NI emphasized the devastating impact on Ward’s family and urged the public to come forward with any information that might assist the authorities.

Leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Foreman expressed his team’s commitment to solving this heinous crime swiftly and offered his profound sympathies to Ms. Ward’s loved ones. The authorities are appealing to anyone who may have seen Ms. Ward or who was in contact with her near the time of her death to come forward and assist in the investigation.

As the community reels from this loss and as the official probe underway, the hope remains that justice for Mary Ward and a broader reckoning with the issue of violence against women in Northern Ireland may emerge from this tragic event.
