Tragic Murder-Suicide in Corner Community Claims Lives of Local Couple: Investigation Underway

DORA, Ala. — Authorities have identified a man and woman who died in a tragic murder-suicide incident earlier this week in the Corner community. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were dispatched to a residence on White Road shortly after 11:40 p.m. Monday.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered the bodies of 52-year-old Amy Ruth Oestenstad and 55-year-old Elton James Barks Jr. Both individuals had sustained gunshot wounds. Medical personnel pronounced them dead at the scene shortly thereafter.

Investigators believe Barks was the shooter, having initially turned the weapon on Oestenstad before taking his own life. Preliminary findings indicate that the two were in a relationship, although the motive behind the tragic event remains unclear.

Community members are encouraged to reach out for assistance if they or someone they know is experiencing a crisis. Help is available through various support services, including the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which can be reached by calling or texting 988.

Local officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event, and they are urging anyone with additional information to step forward. The community is mourning the loss while seeking understanding and healing in the aftermath.
