Fordyce, AR — A tragic event unfolded in a small Arkansas town on Friday when a man opened fire at a local grocery store, resulting in three fatalities and 10 injuries, including two police officers. State authorities have arrested 44-year-old Travis Eugene Posey, who was also injured during the incident.
Authorities responded to a report of an active shooter at the Mad Butcher grocery store shortly before noon. According to Mike Hagar, Secretary of Public Safety and the head of the Arkansas State Police, law enforcement officers promptly arrived at the scene and engaged the suspect in a shootout.
The situation was swiftly contained, with no further threats to the community, said Hagar. He described the injuries to the suspect and both officers as non-life-threatening, while the conditions of the civilians varied from non-serious to critical.
Posey, hailing from New Edinburg, is now facing three counts of capital murder, with additional charges expected as the investigation progresses. After receiving medical attention for his injuries, Posey was taken to the Ouachita County Detention Center. Officials have not confirmed whether he has obtained legal representation.

The definition used by the archive classifies a mass shooting as an event where four or more individuals are shot, excluding the assailant.
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed her sorrow over the events on social media, stating she has been in constant communication with state police to monitor the situation and respond effectively.
Witnesses near the scene recounted harrowing moments. David Rodriguez, who was nearby at a gas station, mistook initial gunfire sounds for fireworks before realizing the severity of the situation as the shooting escalated, prompting people to flee for safety. According to Rodriguez, the grocery store’s windows appeared to have been shattered by gunfire.
Inside the store, some employees and customers sought refuge in a cooler, hiding from the gunfire, as reported by Fordyce City Council Member Roderick Rogers. He was in a phone call with someone inside the store when the shooting began, describing the unfolding situation as intense.
Rogers emphasized the traumatic impact on survivors and mentioned efforts to arrange counseling services for those affected.
Fordyce, a typically peaceful community of just over 3,300 residents located in southeast Dallas County, is now grappling with the aftermath of this violent outbreak, reflecting broader concerns over gun violence across the nation.
