DELTONA, Fla. — A tragic sequence of events unfolded early Thursday morning when a 38-year-old woman was found deceased by her teenage daughter, the aftermath of what authorities believe was a murder-suicide involving her ex-husband. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred at approximately 2:23 a.m. in the residential area of the 3200 block of Parma Drive.
The deceased, identified as Ashley Vaia, was discovered in her home. Authorities said that her ex-husband, 33-year-old Samuel Vaia, is suspected of the killing and later died from injuries sustained in a car crash following a high-speed pursuit and a standoff with law enforcement. According to reports, he suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Following the shooting, Samuel Vaia fled the scene. Using advanced detection technology, deputies tracked his vehicle speeding northward out of Volusia County, reaching speeds over 100 mph. The pursuit ended in Flagler County where law enforcement deployed stopsticks to halt his vehicle, which resulted in a crash. Officials described him as armed and dangerous, and noted he was wearing body armor during the encounter.
The couple had a history of domestic disturbances. Sheriff’s deputies had intervened just a week earlier, responding to a complaint by Ashley Vaia. She reported that Samuel, with whom she was attempting to reconcile, had forcibly taken her phone during a late-night altercation, accusing her of infidelity. At the time, Samuel Vaia was required to surrender all firearms as part of the conditions following his arrest on battery charges. Three firearms were handed over to authorities, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.
Tragically, Ashley Vaia is survived by three children, ages 2, 19, and 21. The community and law enforcement are particularly concerned about the impact of this event on them and other family members. Sheriff Mike Chitwood expressed deep sympathies, noting the rapid and dangerous escalation common in domestic violence cases which too often result in tragic outcomes.
“This senseless act of violence takes a devastating toll on the family and friends of the victims,” Sheriff Chitwood stated. “Each incident reminds us of the critical need to vigilantly protect potential victims and intervene in domestic violence situations.”
Local resources for individuals facing domestic violence include the Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County. This organization provides free and confidential support and can be contacted through various channels for those in need. Additionally, the National Domestic Violence Hotline remains a vital resource for support and advice, available nationwide.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges and the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to prevent domestic violence and adequately support those at risk in the community. As the investigation continues, the sheriff’s office is asking anyone with additional information to come forward to aid in their ongoing efforts to understand the full scope of this tragedy and to prevent such occurrences in the future.
