HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — A tragic incident unfolded on Long Island where a 29-year-old woman, Brenda Guadalupe Alfaro-Alcantara, was fatally stabbed allegedly by the father of her child, officials reported. The attack occurred in the basement of a Hempstead residence, a sobering scene witnessed by the couple’s 2-year-old son.
Alfaro-Alcantara suffered 34 stab wounds during an altercation that began when Jose W. Funes-Zabala, 43, visited the home. The dispute reportedly escalated after Funes-Zabala learned that Alfaro-Alcantara had begun a new relationship. The violence occurred just one day after a protective order against Funes-Zabala had expired.
The couple had a history of a tumultuous relationship. In October 2023, Alfaro-Alcantara sought legal protection after her child sustained serious injuries while under his father’s care. Despite their strained relationship, Funes-Zabala came to the home under the guise of visiting his son, leading to the fatal confrontation.
Neighbors and family members expressed their horror and grief. “It’s unimaginable what this toddler witnessed. This tragedy is just unbelievable,” said a visibly shaken neighbor, echoing the sentiment of a community in shock.
After the attack, the young child, smeared with his mother’s blood, was found by other family members after he wandered out of the apartment. Meanwhile, Funes-Zabala fled the scene, only to be later discovered at a local hospital with self-inflicted injuries.
