BOCA RATON, Fla. — A tragic incident unfolded when a small Cessna 310 aircraft crashed into the train tracks west of I-95 near the Town Center Mall shortly after taking off from the Boca Raton Airport, claiming the lives of three people and injuring one on the ground. The crash, which occurred at 10:12 a.m. as the plane was en route to Tallahassee, led to a fiery explosion and scattered debris across a busy road.
Authorities reported that the pilot had been attempting to return to the airport due to a mechanical failure when the disaster struck. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft was dealing with a rudder issue that made it increasingly difficult to maneuver.
Assistant Fire Chief Michael LaSalle of Boca Raton Fire Rescue recounted the events, stating that their teams rushed to the scene following distress calls about a plane in trouble. “The aircraft had apparently some mechanical issues and went down here on Military Trail,” LaSalle explained.
As emergency crews responded, it was confirmed that along with the three fatalities on board the aircraft, a bystander on the ground sustained non-life-threatening injuries. According to fire rescue officials, the injured individual was in a vehicle that drove through a fireball from the crash, which resulted in the car colliding with a nearby tree.
Mayor Scott Singer expressed his condolences, emphasizing the city’s mourning over the tragic accident. “On behalf of the city, we express our heartbreak at this tragic loss of life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and all affected,” Singer said.
Eyewitness accounts provided insights into the terrifying moments before the crash. Lynn University student Jared Scarpato, who saw the aircraft struggle, noted, “They kept circling, but couldn’t really get the airplane on the ground safely, so they kept going around,” indicating that the plane could only make left turns due to its compromised rudder.
The crash led to extensive road closures around the area, with North Military Trail shut down between Northwest 19th Street and Butts Road, expected to remain closed overnight. The I-95 overpass at Glades Road was temporarily closed but reopened later. Local police and fire departments are assisting in managing the scene and directing traffic away from the area.
Tri-Rail services were not interrupted by the crash, although buses were deployed to transport passengers to the nearest stations affected by the incident. The Tri-Rail Public Information Officer commented on the situation, forecasting potential delays and advising passengers to plan accordingly.
Local authorities, including officials from Boca Raton Community High School, assured that everyone on campus was safe. They advised parents and staff about possible delays in district-run transportation due to the emergency response and ongoing road closures.
