Jacksonville, Florida — A recent officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville has drawn attention following the death of a 20-year-old man and injuries sustained by a police officer. The incident, which is under investigation, occurred on July 9 on Norfolk Boulevard, as outlined in a briefing released by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The confrontation began when Jamari Akins entered a local business on Soutel Drive while wearing a mask and concealing a firearm. He reportedly threatened the cashier and made off with about $100. Law enforcement officers responded quickly, identifying Akins based on the description provided by witnesses.
During the pursuit, Akins allegedly fired at Officer Luis Mercado, hitting him in the thigh. Mercado returned fire, striking Akins twice. In addition to the external review, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will initiate an internal assessment to ensure compliance with departmental protocols. A Response to Resistance Board will also convene to evaluate the incident, and their findings will eventually be submitted to the Sheriff for final evaluation.
