NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — A tragic incident unfolded at Fashion Island on Tuesday when a 69-year-old woman died after being struck by a vehicle during a robbery attempt. The Newport Beach Police Department reported that the incident occurred in the afternoon near the Barnes & Noble bookstore, involving a confrontation between the woman, her husband, and two assailants.
Upon arriving at the scene around 3:30 p.m., officers discovered that the suspects had tried to rob the couple. A struggle ensued, during which one of the suspects attempted to flee in a white Toyota Camry. In the chaos, the vehicle struck the woman while escaping. Originally, there were reports of gunfire, but authorities later confirmed that the woman was hit by the car, not shot.
Police spokesperson, Officer Steve Oberon, detailed that the suspects dragged the woman on the street during the altercation. Her husband was not injured in the incident. Following a brief pursuit, three suspects were apprehended by law enforcement in different locations, including Cypress and South Gate, Los Angeles County.
The capture of the suspects involved a significant police presence, including officers surrounding a home in South Gate, some with weapons drawn. The event caused considerable alarm at the shopping mall, leading some stores to lockdown. An eyewitness working nearby described the fearful atmosphere as shoppers were unsure what was happening initially.
Mayor Will O’Neill of Newport Beach expressed his outrage over the incident, strongly condemning the actions of the suspects and emphasizing the need for societal improvement to prevent such crimes. “Newport Beach is a safe community, and it’s heartbreaking to lose a community member in such a violent incident,” O’Neill stated. He assured residents that the mall has “phenomenal security” and remains a safe place despite the tragic occurrence.
The mayor also commended the quick response and effectiveness of the local police in apprehending the suspects, though he lamented that it does not bring back the lost life. He went on to reassure the public and visitors that the shopping mall is still a secure environment suitable for families.
