Madison, Wis. – Tragedy struck a local Christian school Monday morning when a teenage girl opened fire, killing another student and a teacher, and injuring six others during a study hall session. Authorities confirmed the shooter, identified as 15-year-old Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The violence unfolded just before 11 a.m. at Abundant Life Christian School, a K-12 institution housing around 400 students. Police arrived swiftly at the scene, within three minutes of the first 911 call, which was made by a second-grader in a nearby classroom.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes described the day’s events as profoundly saddening and emphasized the swift action of law enforcement and emergency services. “Today truly is a sad day for Madison and for our country,” Barnes stated. “It is a day that I believe will live in our collective minds for a very, very long time.”
At the scene, first responders found multiple victims and pronounced two fatalities: a teenage student and a teacher. Among the wounded, two suffered life-threatening injuries, while the others, including three students and another teacher, were promptly treated at local hospitals. Two of the injured had been released by Monday evening.
Chief Barnes, in multiple briefings throughout the day, disclosed that the shooter’s family was cooperating with law enforcement, though the motive behind the shooting remained unclear. He also highlighted that there were no prior indications of the impending violence nor any evidence the shooter had previous contact with police.
Rumors circulated online about a possible manifesto belonging to Rupnow, but Barnes cautioned that its authenticity had not yet been confirmed. He did, however, acknowledge that the assailant might have planned the attack in advance, as suggested by investigative findings, including writings believed to be authored by Rupnow.
As the community began to process the shocking events, the school’s director of elementary and school relations, Barbara Wiers, stated that the incident had deeply affected not only the school but also the surrounding areas. “It rocked our school community,” she said, noting the students’ adherence to lockdown procedures which they recognized as real from the onset.
In the wake of the shooting, parents frantically sought to reunite with their children. Bethany Highman, a mother of one of the students, recounted the harrowing moments leading up to her reuniting with her daughter via FaceTime. “As soon as it happened, your world stops for a minute. Nothing else matters,’’ Highman expressed. “You just bolt for the door and try to do everything you can as a parent to be with your kids.”
President Biden responded to the incident by calling for stricter gun control measures. “Every child deserves to feel safe in their classroom,” he stated, urging Congress to act against what he described as an ongoing scourge of gun violence affecting educational institutions nationwide.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers expressed solidarity with the victims and gratitude towards the first responders: “We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond.”
As the investigation continued, federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined local authorities to assist. Community leaders and officials pledged to support the healing process for all impacted by this devastating event, as Madison, and indeed the country, mourned the losses suffered in yet another violent school incident.
