BOCA RATON, Fla. — A tragic incident unfolded Monday when a Cessna 310 aircraft, destined for Tallahassee, crashed shortly after takeoff from Boca Raton Airport, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to a bystander. The crash, which occurred around 10:12 a.m., led to a fiery scene along Military Trail, not far from the bustling Town Center Mall and crucial transportation routes.
The small plane was attempting to circle back to the airport due to a reported mechanical failure involving the rudder that impaired its ability to land. According to a local student and witness, Jared Scarpato, the aircraft struggled to descend safely, perpetually making left turns as it tried to navigate back.
The aircraft ultimately went down on the railway tracks west of Interstate 95, causing significant disruptions. Boca Raton Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Michael LaSalle detailed that the emergency response teams were swiftly dispatched to the site following a distress call about the aircraft’s difficulties.
In addition to the fatalities, a person on the ground sustained non-life-threatening injuries when their car traversed through a fireball ejected from the crash and subsequently collided with a tree.
The immediate area surrounding the crash site, including parts of North Military Trail, was sealed off to facilitate the preliminary investigation and ensure public safety. Boca Raton Police advised that closures might extend indefinitely as the investigation progresses. Traffic services were also redirected, with local train schedules adjusted and shuttle buses introduced to ferry passengers around the affected routes.
City officials, including Mayor Scott Singer, expressed deep condolences over the event, extending sympathy to the families of the deceased and those impacted by this calamity. “Our hearts go out to everyone touched by this tragic incident,” Singer commented.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has taken charge of the inquiry to ascertain the precise cause of the crash. This investigation will include examining the aircraft’s mechanical integrity and the decision-making process in the moments leading up to the crash.
