In response to the disaster, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has stated that security forces were quickly deployed to stabilize the situation and assist in the evacuation of the festival participants. “This is a very sad day,” Makinde expressed in his statement, extending his condolences to the bereaved families.

Local media sources have identified the event organizers as the Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation, a group known for hosting similar large-scale events. Last year, the foundation held a comparable festival which reportedly unfolded without incident.
The lure of winning scholarships and other substantial rewards reportedly drew the large number of attendees, which local radio station Agidigbo FM suggests mirrored the expectations set by last year’s successful gathering.
Nigeria’s national emergency services have been actively involved, dispatching teams to offer necessary medical and logistical support to the victims and their families.
