Gujrat, India — Severe storms have claimed the lives of at least 14 individuals and injured 16 more over the past two days, as violent weather swept through various regions in Gujarat. Reports indicate that the storms produced heavy rain, hail, and dust storms that affected approximately 168 talukas, particularly in the Saurashtra, Kutch, and central Gujarat areas.
The fatalities were attributed to multiple storm-related incidents, including collapsed walls, fallen trees, and lightning strikes. The Kheda district faced the highest toll, with five reported deaths, followed by four in Dahod, three in Vadodara, and one each in Ahmedabad and Aravalli.
In Saurashtra, locals experienced intense rainfall accompanied by marble-sized hail, especially in the Botad and Rajkot regions. Pipardi village in Botad saw significant hail and rain, leading to powerful winds that added to the danger in the area. Reports of damage continue to rise, with at least 26 animals reported dead—nine in Panchmahal district and seven in Mahesana.
The intense weather caused damage to a number of homes, with seven properties affected, most notably six in Panchmahal. In Rajkot and Jamnagar, residents witnessed lightning and heavy rain, while additional storms were reported across Devbhoomi Dwarka and Banaskantha, contributing to a sense of chaos and urgency in the region.
Rainfall has varied widely, with reports of up to 40 millimeters, or about 1.5 inches, recorded in Kheda and numerous districts experiencing over 30 millimeters within a 24-hour period. Public transportation and daily life have been disrupted as streets flooded and the risk of further storm damage loomed.
In Ahmedabad, a severe dust storm preceded heavy rainfall on May 5, causing strong winds that toppled at least 46 trees across 75 locations. The India Meteorological Department has predicted more rain in the coming days, with wind gusts reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, significantly reducing visibility and creating hazards for drivers.
As the storm continues to impact the region, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety amidst the unpredictable weather. Emergency teams are deployed to assess damages and assist affected families, while the community rallies to support those in need during this crisis.
