Nantucket, MA – In an alarming series of events, the peaceful community of Nantucket has been shaken by three tragic deaths at local beaches within a span of three weeks this summer, an occurrence that has left both officials and residents deeply concerned.
Harbormaster Sheila Lucey, who oversees the island’s lifeguard program, described the sequence of events as unprecedented. “It has been a deeply tragic period for us,” Lucey expressed. “Despite the best efforts and thorough training of our lifeguards, the outcomes have been heartbreaking.”
The recent wave of incidents began on July 20 with the death of a participant in the Nantucket Triathlon at Jetties Beach, followed by the loss of an 80-year-old man at Miacomet Beach on August 6. The series of unfortunate events continued with the death of a 31-year-old man near Ladies Beach, which occurred at an unguarded adjacent beach under harsh surf conditions.
Lucey, who also manages the beaches, had proactively closed all south shore beaches for swimming on the day of the latest incident in response to the rough conditions and had double red flags posted as warnings. Lifeguards did their utmost to provide assistance and performed CPR on each victim, but despite their rapid response and effort, the victims could not be saved.
The lifeguards involved, many of whom are college and high school students, have faced an extremely challenging emotional toll from these tragic events. “They are deeply committed to their roles,” Lucey said. “Each day, they return, ready to assist, uphold their responsibilities, and face whatever the day brings.”
To support the emotional well-being of the lifeguards, the Harbormaster’s office has arranged for peer support groups and critical incident stress management sessions. Lucey highlighted the importance of these resources, noting, “The support sessions are invaluable, and the guards are encouraged to take full advantage of them.”
While investigations are ongoing, the causes of the drownings are not yet definitively known. There has been speculation about possible underlying medical issues or other contributing factors leading to these unfortunate outcomes. Meanwhile, officials are reviewing safety protocols and reiterating the importance of heeding flag warnings and lifeguard advisories.
Community members and officials alike are calling for heightened awareness and precaution among beachgoers, especially under adverse weather conditions. “We are working closely with local authorities to assess and enhance our safety measures so that our residents and visitors can enjoy our beautiful beaches with confidence,” Lucey stated, underlining a collective commitment to safety.
