GORMANSTON, Ireland — Tragedy struck in Co Meath on Monday morning as a multi-vehicle collision involving a bus, a truck, and a car left two drivers dead and several others hospitalized with injuries. The crash, which occurred around 6:30 a.m. on the R132, has drawn attention from local officials and residents who express growing concerns over road safety in the area.
The deceased include the male truck driver, who was in his 40s, and the bus driver, a man in his 50s, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. A woman in her 40s, driving the car involved, and a teenage girl who was a passenger sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The woman was admitted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, while the girl was first taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital before being moved to Temple Street Children’s Hospital.
In addition to the serious cases, several others with non-life-threatening injuries were also treated at local medical facilities. Authorities have closed the road while conducting a forensic examination of the collision site.
Bus Éireann confirmed that one of its vehicles on the 101 service, a key route between Dundalk and Dublin, was involved in the accident. Staff members were dispatched to the scene to assist.
Local authorities expressed their shock at the incident. Councillor Sharon Tolan described the event as tragic and indicative of a larger issue with road safety in the region. “Every day, it seems we’re hearing about accidents that impact our community,” she said, noting that the road is frequently used by schoolchildren and commuters. “We need to find solutions to reduce these devastating occurrences.”
Senator Sharon Keogan echoed these sentiments, calling it “another dark day on our roads” and emphasizing the urgent need for measures to enhance safety. She mentioned that sirens could be heard in the vicinity shortly before the crash was reported.
