VERO BEACH, Florida — A gunman who fatally shot a deputy in Indian River County during a confrontation earlier this week has died from his injuries, authorities reported Saturday.
Michael Halberstam, 37, opened fire on two deputies and a locksmith on Friday while they were serving an eviction notice at a residence where his mother sought to evict him. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, police returned fire, striking Halberstam multiple times. He succumbed to his wounds the following day, as confirmed by the county sheriff’s office.
Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow lost her life during the incident, while the second deputy is recovering from a shoulder injury. The locksmith, whose identity has not been disclosed, is in critical condition following surgery, according to a spokesperson for HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital.
Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers stated that the agency had previously received seven calls from the residence over the past month, most of which came from Halberstam’s mother. Despite these calls, the sheriff indicated that deputies approached this eviction with the expectation of a routine process.
“This was a standard call for service,” Flowers said, noting that Halberstam had no history that would suggest a potential threat.
Emotional during a news conference, Sheriff Flowers paid tribute to Sweeting-Mashkow, who had dedicated 25 years of service to the sheriff’s office. He emphasized the profound impact her loss will have on the team, noting that they would “feel this forever.”
In recognition of her service, Sweeting-Mashkow received a posthumous promotion to the rank of sergeant on Saturday, underscoring the dedication and sacrifice she exemplified throughout her career.
In light of this tragedy, local officials are reviewing their response protocols for eviction situations, aiming to enhance safety measures for both law enforcement and civilians in the future. The community is mourning the loss of a respected deputy while grappling with the stark reality of violence during routine law enforcement duties.
