NEW ORLEANS — A 21-year-old man facing murder charges in connection with the death of a restaurant sous chef has died from a gunshot wound, according to police. Raymond Wells was pronounced dead early Friday at University Medical Center after being discovered unresponsive in a stolen vehicle on Interstate 10.
Wells was linked to the fatal shooting of Carl Morgan, who worked at the renowned Brennan’s restaurant. The crime occurred last Tuesday evening outside the Abeona House Child Discovery Center, where Morgan had been waiting to pick up his son. Police reported that Wells shot Morgan at approximately 5:17 p.m., stole his car, and subsequently fled the scene, leaving the chef gravely injured.
Authorities located Wells later that day around 5:30 p.m. as he sat behind the wheel of the stolen car, which had come to a halt on the interstate. He was in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. Investigators have not yet determined whether Wells was shot by another person or if the injury was self-inflicted. An autopsy is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding his death.
