AUSTIN, Texas — A tragic incident has shaken the community after a 20-year-old man was fatally shot while trying to reclaim his family’s stolen vehicle. Two juveniles, aged 12 and 13, are now facing charges of capital murder in connection with the May 3 incident.
Authorities announced the arrest of the two young suspects on Monday, revealing that the confrontation occurred in southeast Austin. The victim, Anthony Salas, was reportedly shot while attempting to retrieve his vehicle, which had been stolen. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as Salas was shot and then tragically run over.
Local resident Martin Wells expressed his disbelief and concern over such a violent act involving minors. “It’s terrible, the whole situation. My mind can hardly grasp how children can be involved in something like this,” he said, highlighting the unsettling impact on the neighborhood.
Witnesses reported that Salas was shot during a confrontation with the suspects regarding his car. Family members were present at the scene, adding to the trauma of the event. Detective Michael Decker of the Austin Police emphasized the greater value of life compared to material possessions, stating, “Your life is worth more than property.” The emotional toll on the victim’s family is profound, according to the detective.
In the days leading up to the arrests, authorities had sought public assistance in identifying individuals connected to a series of vehicle burglaries in the area. Surveillance footage captured images of the suspects, leading police to confirm their involvement in Salas’s death.
Community member Araceli Valencia lamented the arrests, noting that while accountability is crucial, the involvement of such young individuals is disheartening. “I was hoping that someone would be caught, but I never expected it to be children this young,” she remarked.
In light of this incident, law enforcement urges individuals to exercise caution when attempting to reclaim stolen belongings. Authorities stress the importance of safety over possessions, particularly in potentially dangerous situations. The incident has not only drawn attention to the issue of youth violence but has also left residents questioning the motivations behind such alarming behavior.
