Duncannon, Pennsylvania — An 11-year-old boy has been charged with criminal homicide after authorities allege he killed his father late at night following a dispute over a video game console. The tragic incident occurred just after 3 a.m. on Tuesday, when police responded to a report of an unresponsive male at a residence in the borough, located near Harrisburg.
Douglas Dietz, the 42-year-old victim, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Pennsylvania State Police, the boy, identified as Clayton Dietz, allegedly accessed a firearm stored in a safe within the home and fired a single shot into his father’s head while he slept.
Court records reveal that the shooting followed a celebration for the boy’s birthday that had taken place hours earlier. As Clayton and his family concluded the day, it transitioned into a horrific event that would leave a lasting scar on the community.
Initial investigations indicate that tensions escalated when Clayton’s Nintendo Switch was taken away, fueling his anger. The boy’s mother recounted to police that she was awakened by a loud noise, initially mistaking it for fireworks. When she attempted to wake her husband and received no response, she noticed what she thought was water dripping, only to discover it was blood. It was then that Clayton entered the room and allegedly informed his mother, “I killed Daddy.”
In the moments leading up to the shooting, the family had just celebrated Clayton’s birthday, singing “Happy Birthday” and going to bed shortly after midnight. According to statements from the boy, he expressed that the day had started positively but turned sour when his father insisted it was time to sleep.
Authorities have described Clayton’s access to the firearm as troubling. Investigators learned that the boy discovered the key to the locked safe in his father’s drawer. He reportedly removed the gun, loaded it, and walked over to his father before firing the fatal shot.
When questioned about his actions, Clayton reportedly admitted he intended to shoot his father and indicated that he acted out of frustration without fully contemplating the consequences.
Following the incident, the boy was taken into custody and denied bail at the Perry County Prison, where a court hearing is scheduled for Thursday. This incident has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding firearm access in homes with children.
