Imphal, India — A deadly outbreak of violence struck the Kangpokpi district over the weekend, resulting in the death of one man and injuries to approximately 20 individuals, including eight security officers. The turmoil began when a mob assaulted a convoy transporting civilians along a national highway, instigating widespread mayhem.
Reports noted that the violent mob set vehicles on fire, hurled stones, and shot at the convoy. This intense confrontation forced local authorities to intervene as the chaotic situation escalated. The highway was subsequently obstructed with debris from the assault, and demonstrators further escalated the tension by staging a sit-in on the road.
The blockade not only caused severe transportation disruptions but also prompted a swift response from security forces. Clashes emerged between the protesting groups and law enforcement, adding to the day’s injuries and fatalities.
In an attempt to quell the unrest and restore order, the Manipur government launched special bus services on Saturday. This initiative, endorsed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, sought to facilitate the clearing of blocked roads and help normalize the grim circumstances. Despite these endeavors, the protesters resisted, continuing their blockade and challenging these efforts.
The lingering blockades have severely impacted the connectivity among several districts including Imphal East, Imphal West, Senapati, Tamenglong, and Ukhrul, with traffic to and from neighboring Nagaland nearly at a standstill. The protesters’ actions included stone-throwing and vehicle obstruction, which further complicated matters.
Amid renewed efforts to enforce the Union Home Minister’s directive, a contingent from the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) attempted to navigate vehicles along the Imphal to Senapati highway. While initially receiving support in valley areas, their progress was hindered by intense security measures upon reaching the Kangpokpi district. Here, various Kuki organizations had declared a vehicular movement ban, intensifying the standoff.
Authorities remain on high alert as the situation continues to be fraught with tension. Efforts to stabilize the crisis are ongoing, with officials keenly focused on preventing further violence and restoring peace to the beleaguered district.
