ST. GABRIEL, La. — The deaths of two inmates at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center are under investigation by the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office following incidents that occurred just a day apart. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections confirmed that Kavon Matthews, 30, who was serving sentences for simple burglary from Orleans Parish, passed away on October 16. The next day, Michael Johnson, 37, who was serving a life sentence for armed robbery from East Baton Rouge Parish, also died.
Authorities have not disclosed the specific circumstances surrounding either death, but autopsies have been requested to establish their causes. Toxicology reports are pending for Matthews, Johnson, and another inmate who reportedly attempted suicide on October 18 but is presently recovering.
The recent fatalities raise concerns about inmate safety at the correctional center, which has faced scrutiny for ongoing issues. Reports from August indicated significant drug problems within the facility, along with an earlier incident where an unnamed inmate died in September 2025. These issues have prompted calls for increased oversight and reform.
In response to the troubling reports emerging from the facility, Governor Jeff Landry has initiated an investigation by the Louisiana State Police into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and broader operational practices at the correctional center.
Advocates continue to express worry about the conditions in state prisons, arguing that a lack of resources and oversight can lead to severe consequences for inmate health and safety. The situation has ignited discussions on necessary reforms to improve living conditions and accountability within Louisiana’s correctional facilities.
As the investigation unfolds, communities and family members of inmates remain vigilant, seeking answers and accountability in the wake of these tragic events.
