Police responding to a report of a car accident in a residential area found a vehicle with three dead occupants, including a small boy, all of whom had suffered gunshot wounds. The victims were later identified as Eric Ashley Jr., 28, Arkia Berry, 28, and Landon Brooks, 5.
Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond, a veteran of 26 years with the department, expressed his profound despair over the violence, characterizing it as one of the most tragic days of his career. Thurmond passionately assured the public that all available resources would be mobilized to apprehend the perpetrators.
Mayor Randall Woodfin spoke out against the violence in a Sunday press conference, stressing the severity of the situation and urging for community cooperation.
