Creston, British Columbia — The trial of three Indian men charged with the murder of an elderly couple commenced this week, revealing a chilling narrative of financial desperation and alleged premeditation. Crown prosecutor Dorothy Tsui outlined the case against Gurkaran Singh, Abhijeet Singh, and Khushveer Singh Toor, characterizing their actions as driven by “debt, financial pressure and greed.” The couple, Arnold and Joanne De Jong, were discovered deceased in their home on May 9, 2022.
Months prior to the crime, the accused men had performed cleaning services at the De Jong residence. Abhijeet Singh operated a cleaning business, which had worked on the couple’s home in both July 2021 and April 2022. Following the tragic events, the men allegedly pilfered the couple’s credit cards, checks, and a pressure washer.
Significantly, shortly after the murders, Gurkaran Singh, who arrived in Canada on a student visa less than a month before the incident, was implicated in suspicious financial activities. He and Khushveer Singh Toor deposited checks exceeding $5,000, purportedly signed by Joanne De Jong, into their accounts soon after the homicides.
The prosecution indicated that Gurkaran had initially intended to attend Northern Lights College in Dawson Creek but never enrolled. After the couple was killed, the accused fled to Surrey, where they rented an apartment together until their subsequent arrest in 2022. All three men have pleaded not guilty to the charges of first-degree murder.
The trial, set to last approximately 40 days, features at least 24 witnesses from the Crown’s side. Evidence presented will include a substantial amount of circumstantial evidence tying the accused to the crime. This includes forensic elements such as fingerprints, DNA found on a murder weapon located in a car trunk, as well as cellphone and financial records.
Throughout the proceedings, the Crown aims to illustrate a comprehensive case against the trio, utilizing digital evidence from electronic devices that could further implicate them in the alleged crime. As the trial unfolds, the courtroom will likely become a focal point of attention, with the community keenly observing the developments in a case that has shaken the small town of Creston.
