COCOA, FL – In a somber incident on Friday morning, two surveyors lost their lives in a hit-and-run accident on Interstate 95 near Palm Bay. The driver, who fled the scene, was apprehended later that day in Palm Beach County and brought back to Brevard County to face charges.
The crash, which occurred shortly before 10 a.m., involved a tractor-trailer whose driver paused briefly before fleeing the scene, leaving the two workers dead. Authorities launched a manhunt that ended with the driver’s capture over 100 miles away.
Florida Highway Patrol officials, aided by witness testimonies and pieces of the vehicle left at the crash site, tracked down the suspect’s truck in Palm Beach County. The driver was found behind the wheel, marking a crucial development in the investigation.
An FHP spokesperson highlighted the seriousness of the offense, commenting, “Fleeing an accident scene, particularly when it results in fatalities, is a severe violation of the law.”
The suspect has shown little cooperation, yet the trucking company has been proactive, expressing regret over the incident and pledging to assist the investigation fully.
The surveyors, employed by a Volusia County company, were conducting routine work and were situated safely away from traffic lanes, underscoring the senseless nature of the incident.
The suspect is currently held without bond in Brevard County Jail, awaiting a court hearing. Investigators continue to probe whether the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash.
The community is mourning the loss of the two workers, with many calling for heightened safety measures for roadside employees and greater driver awareness to prevent similar tragedies.
