TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. — A makeshift memorial adorned with flowers, candles, and stuffed animals has emerged in Tumbler Ridge, a small community left reeling from a devastating mass shooting that claimed the lives of nine individuals, predominantly children. The tragic event also resulted in the death of the 18-year-old gunman, who reportedly took her own life after the attack.
In the aftermath of the violence, residents gathered for a vigil to honor the victims, seeking solace from shared grief amid frigid temperatures. Mayor Darryl Krakowka addressed the mourners, encouraging them to express their emotions. “It’s okay to cry,” he said, emphasizing that showing vulnerability is a sign of strength. He urged the community, which he described as “one big family,” to support one another, especially those who lost loved ones in the tragedy.
The shooting unfolded in a sequence of shocking events starting at a family residence, where the shooter killed her mother and 11-year-old stepbrother before proceeding to the local high school, where she opened fire indiscriminately. Among the deceased were three girls aged 12, two boys aged 12 and 13, and a 39-year-old educator.
“We must stand together for one another,” Krakowka stated at the vigil, reinforcing the need for collective resilience during such harrowing times. Police identified the shooter as Jesse Van Rootselaar, who had begun transitioning six years prior. Reports indicate that she had a troubled history, including mental health challenges, and had dropped out of school approximately two years later.
B.C. Premier David Eby joined the somber gathering, emphasizing governmental support for Tumbler Ridge’s approximately 2,700 residents. “Officials across different levels of government are united in our commitment to stand with you,” he stated, acknowledging the inadequacy of words in the face of such loss.
