Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh — Tensions escalated in Bangladesh as armed assailants attacked an Air Force base on the southeastern coast, echoing the rising violence under the country’s interim government. The assailants reportedly targeted the air base early Tuesday, triggering a swift response from Bangladesh Air Force personnel. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, indicated that the attackers originated from the nearby Samity Para neighborhood. In the ensuing confrontations, a number of injuries were reported as air force members engaged with the attackers.
Local reports suggest that the confrontation began shortly after district authorities advised residents in the vicinity of the air base to relocate to the Khurushkul Housing Project. The directive, aimed at clearing the area for security reasons, led to unrest and subsequent clashes around 11:30 AM.
The violence at Cox’s Bazar is part of a broader pattern of unrest since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. The interim government, led by Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, has struggled to maintain order, with incidents of violence becoming increasingly frequent. Just last week, the nation was shocked by the murder of Mohammad Babul Mia, a leader from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
BNP leader Shamsuzzaman Dudu expressed his despair over the ongoing violence under the interim rule. He emphasized the urgency of bringing perpetrators to justice, warning that delays could exacerbate public and political grievance. “The killers of workers and political leaders are still at large, endangering justice and safety,” Dudu stated.
Moreover, educational institutions have not been spared from the unrest. Earlier this month, clashes at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology resulted in injuries to over 100 students, igniting further protests and demands for governmental accountability.
