TURTLEMEAT TRAGEDY: Dozens Hospitalized and Several Dead After Eating Sea Turtle in Zanzibar

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – An outbreak of illness and death occurred on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago after several people consumed sea turtle meat. Authorities reported that eight children and one adult lost their lives, while 78 others were hospitalized. The cause of these tragic events was identified as chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning that resulted from eating the sea turtle meat.

The tragic incident took place on a Tuesday, with the adult victim passing away on a Friday. Dr. Haji Bakari, the Medical Officer for the Mkoani District, confirmed that all victims had ingested the contaminated meat. Zanzibar authorities warned against consuming sea turtles due to the dangers posed by chelonitoxism, emphasizing the need for caution when considering such delicacies.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the region. In November 2021, a similar case unfolded on Pemba Island, claiming the lives of seven individuals, including a 3-year-old child. Three others were also hospitalized during that incident. The disaster management team on the island, led by Hamza Hassan Juma, is actively working to prevent further tragedies by educating the public about the risks of consuming sea turtle meat.

The local population in Zanzibar considers sea turtle meat a delicacy, unaware of the potential deadly consequences associated with its consumption. The recent outbreak serves as a grim reminder of the importance of food safety practices and awareness. The tragedy highlights the need for stricter regulations and public health initiatives to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

As the investigation into the cause of the outbreak continues, authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and avoid consuming sea turtles. The loss of lives serves as a somber warning about the dangers of consuming certain types of food without awareness of the potential risks. The community is grieving the loss of the victims and working towards ensuring such tragedies are prevented in the future.
