Stockton, England — Two twin brothers have been sentenced to four years in prison for a violent assault that left a man unconscious. The incident, which took place on Hartington Road, involved a brutal attack captured by surveillance cameras, highlighting the severity of their actions.
According to the prosecution, Leon Bayat initiated the assault by wielding a metal pole. As he struck the victim, footage revealed Leon relentlessly kicking the man multiple times and jumping on him while he lay defenseless on the ground. The violence escalated when his twin brother, Lewis Bayat, emerged from their residence to participate in the continued assault.
Cainan Lonsdale, the prosecutor, described the brothers’ actions as coordinated and excessively aggressive. He noted how, after the assault, they attempted to change their clothing in an effort to evade capture but were apprehended nearby shortly afterward.
Witnesses reported that the victim did not cooperate with law enforcement during the investigation and did not provide an impact statement, which further complicated the case. Prior to this incident, the Bayat twins were already under a community order for a previous assault on a police officer in a hotel.
The twins, both 20 years old, pleaded guilty to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm related to the April 7 attack. Their defense attorneys highlighted the challenging backgrounds of the brothers, with Leon’s representative mentioning a troubled upbringing in the care system. She emphasized the close bond between the twins as they navigated their difficulties together.
Lewis’s attorney noted that he was still a teenager at the time of the incident and had recently turned 20 while awaiting trial. During sentencing, Recorder Andrew Sutcliffe KC expressed concern over the nature of the assault after viewing the video evidence.
Sutcliffe remarked on the serious injuries sustained by the victim, affirming that the twins’ actions warranted significant consequences. The ruling serves as a stark reminder of the potential for violence in seemingly ordinary situations, and the harsh penalties that can follow such reckless behavior.
